Do I need to file a company tax return?
A few plain questions — no figures, no jargon. We'll tell you exactly what your company has to file.
Is your business a limited company?
A limited company has a company number from Companies House (it ends in 'Ltd' or 'Limited').
Does my company need to file a tax return?
If you run a limited company that traded or earned money, you must file two things: yearly accounts to Companies House and a Company Tax Return (the CT600) to HMRC — even if you made a loss. A company that has never traded files simpler dormant accounts and can tell HMRC it is dormant. But if your company has ever traded — even if it is quiet now — HMRC usually still expects a return for the time it was active, and you have to tell HMRC properly before it is treated as dormant, so you may still owe a return: check with us first. And if HMRC has sent you a letter asking for a return, you must file that return even if the company is dormant.
